CloudSight is a cloud processing engine that analyzes millions of data points from all your AiRE instances with AI to present a variety of data‑driven reports. Discover how Birra Castello was able to use its new AiRE IntelligentFIler solution right out of the box and vastly improve on Veeam features with guaranteed full file system consistency.

The customer

Birra Castello S.p.A. is an Italian brewery that was founded in 1997 when it took over the premises in San Giorgio di Nogaro (northeastern Italy) previously owned by Birra Moretti (1983) and Heineken Italia SpA (1996). In 2006, the company also took over the historic Pedavena brewery, which was founded in 1897 by the three Luciani brothers (Luigi, Sante and Giovanni). The brewery slowly grew, only to be robbed of its copper and partially burned down by invading Austrians in World War I. The brewery was quickly rebuilt and saw its glory days after World War II before changing hands and becoming part of the Heineken Group from 1974 until the days of Birra Castello in 2006.

Birra Castello S.p.A. produces an assortment of beers with varying tastes, and it owns the Spoken, Kiefer, Alpen, Axt Bier and Birra Dolomiti brands as well as Birra Italia in Ho.Re.Ca. In addition, Birra Castello also produces non‑alcoholic beer.

Birra Castello’s IT team leverages IT infrastructure delivered by managed IT service provider Alma Pro to adapt to and sustain the company’s rapid growth. The company used backup as a service from Alma Pro and Veem backup software but wanted to improve the Veem backups to ensure its data was secure. Veeam® Backup & Replication™ 9.5 delivers Hyper‑Availability for all virtual, physical and cloud‑based workloads – including support for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper‑V – from a single management console. It provides Intelligent Data Management and meets the backup demands of the Hyper‑Available Enterprise to reduce complexity and out‑perform legacy backup.

Merlin: a one‑stop shop for cloud admin

Birra Castello also wanted to make sure the backup images on the IT servers were always available and consistent so that they would be fully prepared for any new demands. The company also introduced off‑site replication with the help of Alma Pro managed services to guarantee the availability of a copy of the data for disaster recovery purposes.

Alma Pro had already been using AiRE IntelligentFiler by Storvix for its own internal IT processes for some time. The experience and confidence gained from this led Alma Pro to realize that AiRE would be the perfect system for building managed IT services, especially data protection services. Therefore, Storvix worked closely with Alma Pro to build the architecture for this and enable it together.

As a result of the strong performance Alma Pro had observed from AiRE, Alma Pro did not hesitate to recommend the system to its customer, Birra Castello. This made it easy to demonstrate the benefits of the system, such as perfect data consistency.

Birra Castello implemented AiRE IntelligentFiler model 3124 to receive Veem backups locally. As the heart of IntelligentFiler, AiRE has powerful features that serve as the lifeblood of the full AiRE IntelligentFiler solution. These features provide continuous protection from corruption, disasters and breaches while optimal performance is always ensured by automating I/O path management, application profile recognition and data reduction.

One of the benefits appreciated by Birra Castello was that the agility of the system made it extremely fast and easy to implement. Unlike more complex systems that take days to set up, the entire system was up and running in just a few hours on the very same day it was delivered.

Thanks to the ease of integration and use, Birra Castello’s entire IT team was able to use the system effectively right out of the box and the first off‑site copy was sent off in no time.
AiRE’s corruption immunity capabilities provided full source and target consistency in the file system. This and offsite replication were the keys to improving the Veem software features already available and helping Birra Castello get the maximum value from the solution.
